When Are Braces Recommended?

Children and younger teens often are inconsistent about wearing clear aligners for twenty-two hours per day, so we recommend braces for this age group. We also recommend braces for any patients of any age when more extensive changes need to be made to correct the position of the teeth. Ceramic braces are a more aesthetically pleasing alternative, and many adults choose this option. We generally don’t offer ceramic for kids and teens, because ceramic requires more care to avoid staining or damaging them.

As general dentists, we offer braces for kids ages ten or eleven and up. For younger kids or severe conditions, we will refer you to a specialist.

Braces vs Clear Aligners

The treatment time with braces is longer than with clear aligners, and the results are more precise. Clear aligners are a good choice for cosmetic issues, while braces can correct more extensive issues.

FAQ

How long will it take?

Since every patient’s situation is different, treatment times vary. However, most people wear braces for eighteen to twenty-four months.

Can I play sports?

Yes, you can play sports while wearing braces. However, we strongly recommend you wear a mouthguard every time you play.

Will it hurt?

Since your teeth are moving, there will be some pain or discomfort at times, and you may feel like your teeth are loose. This is not a cause for concern—it’s perfectly normal. Panadol or Nurofen can help with the pain.

What can I eat?

When you begin getting braces, we will give you an extensive list of foods you can eat and foods you should avoid.
